Writers Can Avoid Boring Story Writing

Don't bore readers if you want them to keep reading what you write. Easy enough to say, but not so easy to do. What's boring to one person may not be for another. Some parts might be relatively boring but add texture and nuance to something that otherwise would have been bland. Without a doubt there are no hard and fast rules in regards to keeping your writing interesting, but there are certainly guidelines that can help. There are certain types of information that just don't interest readers and some reasons why.

Lack Of Meaning

Whatever you write in a story needs to be meaningful to the reader, otherwise why include it. Anything you include should add to the whole and not stand apart as separate. Too often writers add passages that may be well-written or seem important to the writer but they don't have an impact on the story they are telling. Just because it popped into your head doesn't mean it needs to be in the story.

Unmotivated Actions

A character doing something out of character that is not treated as such is tedious for readers. A pacifist who shoots somebody after a simple misunderstanding and afterward is never mentioned again will not foster trust in your writing. Characters, like people, have tendencies toward certain actions and there is a pattern to behavior. If characters deviate radically from what you would think they would do, that is a character development; this person has revealed something previously hidden about themselves. Just because in real life people do random things doesn't mean your characters can.

Inconsequential Details

It's easy to overdo the description of objects, people, or places. If it helps with the comprehension of the matter at hand then it's well to include it. Extraneous detail just to showcase writing prowess is not a good habit to get into. Often the fewer details given the more something can come alive in a reader's head. Keeping to the most striking characteristics, the ones that separate this thing from another, can paint a picture better than an extensive list.

Unclear Stakes

The character might be doing something important but we don't care. We only care when we understand what is to be lost by failing, otherwise it's just a casual event. Casual events can only be entertaining for so long, a story filled with casual events where there is never a risk of losing if something doesn't work out becomes a bore. When you do something to reach a goal there is always a chance of failing and with that chance will likely be consequences. To climb a ladder and clean the rain gutters, there is a chance you can fall and break a leg. Make it clear what could happen if it went wrong and people will care what is happening.

These are just a few categories of things that make up the canon of boring writing. Too often people believe that to keep from boring the readers they need to include non-stop action, sensational description, and sex. The truth is no single element can continually keep attention, but these guidelines can help keep you in the right direction.
